MW4 on Switch 2, what we know so far

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 — What We Know So Far

After a 13-year absence from Nintendo hardware (the last simultaneous release was Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013), the series is returning with Modern Warfare 4. The game launches day-and-date on October 23, 2026, on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Infinity Ward is leading development, with a native Switch 2 version created in partnership with Digital Legends (the studio behind Warzone Mobile). Co-studio head Jack O’Hara has described the process of getting the game running on Switch 2 hardware as “pretty smooth” and “pretty seamless,” noting that the team got it up and running quickly once they received the hardware and is now focused on optimization.

Multiplayer Features

Crossplay is confirmed across all four launch platforms. O’Hara stated: “Right now we support crossplay between Switch 2 and the rest of the platforms. But we’ll see at launch exactly where the mix ends up.” Cross-progression is also supported, so progress travels with your Call of Duty account.

The Switch 2 version includes optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, giving players an alternative input option alongside traditional controller setups.

Game Modes and Story

Modern Warfare 4 features a single-player campaign (confirmed as solo-only), traditional multiplayer, and the DMZ extraction mode. The campaign places players in a conflict involving a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula, with missions spanning trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, chases through Paris, and other global locations.

Availability and Timeline

  • Pre-orders for the Switch 2 version begin August 26, 2026.
  • An open beta weekend that includes Switch 2 is scheduled for late August (around August 28–September 1).

Exact technical details such as resolution and frame-rate targets have not been locked in publicly, though the development team has expressed positive impressions of the Switch 2’s capabilities. As with most multi-platform titles on the system, visual compromises relative to higher-powered platforms are expected in exchange for playable performance, especially in handheld mode.

Modern Warfare 4 marks the first major current-gen Call of Duty to arrive on Nintendo hardware at launch, bringing full multiplayer integration and account progression to Switch 2 players for the first time in over a decade. More details, including pre-order incentives and final performance specs, are expected closer to launch.
